Ms. Lydia Gathoni recounts how the Miss.Africa presented a game changing opportunity for her through the Mobile App training
(a.) General experience with Miss.Africa sponsored, eMobilis training basing a bias on women in tech in Kenya & how your digital skills were enhanced.
I was thrilled when I got the opportunity to learn Android Mobile Programming among 24 other ladies out of 300 applicants and I knew that was a chance I had to take with both hands.
The lessons were great by a passionate lecturer and the staff were very supportive.
I learnt web programming (HTML, CSS, PHP), Java and Android in a way I had never experienced before from my campus lectures, it was practical and very involving thus enabling me to understand and practice more.
(b.) How the Miss.Africa sponsored, eMobilis Training enhanced your perceptions of the involvement of Women in Technology?
While at eMobilis, I interacted with the ladies in my class. I saw the great potential and the ideas ladies have once they are given a chance to express themselves which is what Miss.Africa in conjunction with eMobilis really brought out throughout the program.
(c.) Give us a professional instance during the training that remains a landmark in your career profession.
During presentation of our projects. As I listened to every other lady in my class presenting, I couldn’t help but think how fresh the ideas were and how many problems were solved by the apps developed by the ladies there. It was amazing.
(d.) Outline your take on the future of women technology in Africa/Globally? And a message to other girls who would want to venture into ICT Careers.
The future for women in technology in Africa and globally is bright. There are movements and initiatives all over that empower women in technology – which for a long time has been a position for the male. There is unlimited opportunity and women will spur innovation that will bring about solutions in Africa and globally too.
To the girls who would want to venture into ICT Careers I would tell them, Go for It! If you are committed to excel in an ICT career, nothing can stop you from it and nothing is hard if your put your mind into it.
