Miss.Africa Voices spoke to Ms. Mutune about her mobile App training experience that was Powered by Miss.Africa.  She created a Tax Returns Mobile App.

Ms. Miriam Mutune, App Developer

1. General experience with Miss.Africa sponsored, eMobilis training basing a bias on women in tech in Kenya & how your digital skills were enhanced.

What I got from the three month Mobile App Training  that was powered by Miss.Africa has made a great difference in my career.

At first I was a bit scared because I did not have the sufficient basics for programming, but from the first day with the dedication of our Tutor Mr. Jay Mbuvi, , I set all my concentration to learning and venturing in the coding environment. The eMobilis App Training powered by Miss.Africa Seed Fund was the best experience for me. Learning everything from the basics to be able to create websites and even mobile applications, interacting with other ladies and learning from them too enhanced my coding skills.

2. How the Miss.Africa sponsored, eMobilis Training enhanced your perceptions of the involvement of Women in Technology?

In order for me to venture in programming, it required someone to tell me as a lady that I can do it and be given a chance to do it. With every step we were guided through, I saw the potential I had to make a change as a woman in technology. I had almost lost hope in programming but being at the training made me see the technology world as a place for everyone including myself.

3. Give us a professional instance during the training that remains a landmark in your career profession.

The training really changed my point of view in coding. From that moment on wards, I became confident in applying for programming based jobs because I believed that with the skills I had acquired from the training, I had a bigger opportunity in the technology industry.

4. Outline your take on the future of women technology in Africa/Globally? And a message to other girls who would want to venture into ICT Careers.

Miss. Africa and eMobilis  have really transformed  my thinking towards computer programming . I would advise ladies who are interested in this sector to just go for it. There is a lot awaiting for us in this industry that is deemed to be a man’s world. Hence, a very big difference will be made only if we dig deep in fearlessly. Nothing is too hard to achieve if we are dedicated.

Miss.Africa Voices is a regular online journal that presents women in tech experiences, opinions and observations. These stories come from DotConnectAfrica Internship Alumni and other Women who are leading the tech-preneurship fronts in their own ecosystems. The Miss.Africa Voices also serves to encourage more girls & women to get involved in STEM careers through our Miss.Africa Digital Program.
